Wood turns gray quickly and rots, losing it's beauty relatively quickly.
Plastic heaves out of the ground in winter, warps in the summer or shifts out of place turning into an eyesore very quickly.
Retaining stones are difficult to keep in place; weeds and grass grow through the gaps and become a maintenance issue very quickly.
Unless you go to the huge expense of having a mason set the bricks, you have the same issues as above.
Stones are better served in other applications and are an ineffective landscape border, plus they're very expensive.
Tree rings made from plastic or metal typically heave up from the ground in the cold weather.
Railroad ties contain chemicals that are harmful to people and the environment. Since they are usually purchased "used", their life span and appearance are short lived.
Inferior plastic.
Landscape pavers.
